Out & About - Amelie's... a French Bakery
Out & About is an occasional series of stories that highlight the best Charlotte has to offer in arts and culture, shopping and dining, entertainment and sports.
There's no better place to go in Charlotte if you've got a craving for something sweet than Amelie's... a French Bakery. Better still, this locally owned bakery is open 24 hours a day every day of the year and offers free wireless Internet service and convenient parking.
Amelie's serves gourmet coffees from local roastery Dilworth Coffees and fresh baked French pastries and confections created by expert chefs, some of whom attended Charlotte's own Johnson & Wales University. Amelie's also serves an array of delicious soups, sandwiches, salads and beautiful baked goods, which come from time-honored family recipes as well as new and cutting edge creations. Everything is made in-house, fresh daily and prices range from about $4 to more than $30 for a full size cake.
Sure, they have amazing croissants, tarts, cakes and other pastries. But don't miss their salted caramel brownies, which people drive in from all corners of the Carolinas to savor.
Known for its "Paris shabby-chic" interior and tons of lounging space, Amelie's has become a hub for night owls, early birds and everyone in between. Reminiscent of the café scene of Montmartre, the famous bohemian zone in Paris, Amelie's is a home away from home for grassroots politicians, modern day revolutionaries, starving artists, businessmen and women, students and lots and lots of architects. The staff at Amelie's is equally diverse, ranging in background from Ph.D's to high-schoolers and of every race, origin and creed.
Bring your books and study or take some friends and grab one of the board games or decks of cards they have sprinkled through their massive dining rooms.
