A visit to the Charlotte Observer IMAX® Dome Theatre at Discovery Place Uptown is perfect for those in search of documentary and short subject films that give the sensation of being right in the middle of the action.
The theatre boasts the largest screen in the North Carolina/South Carolina region and provides an intense visual and audio experience that can't be compared to any regular screen experience. Film topics range from the animal kingdom to real life adventures and everything in between. Disaster Response Rescue, Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees and Greece: Secrets of the Past are just a few of the many films that have been showcased at the theatre, along with pop culture favorites including Pink Floyd's The Wall.
The IMAX theatre is located at 301 N. Tryon St., in Uptown Charlotte at Discovery Place-less than a 10 minute drive from Queens. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $9 for seniors and children (2-13). Film times vary, so check the website for current showings, times, directions and parking instructions.
Imax Fun Facts:
• Film travels horizontally through the projector at 24 frames per second. That means over 5.5 feet of film moves through the projector every second. A 45-minute feature film is over 2.5 miles long and weighs about 250 pounds.
• To keep the high-powered projector lamp from exploding, 10 gallons of deionized distilled water is passed through the lamp's electrodes every minute to cool the 1,700 degree surface.
