Preparing for Commencement

Congratulations on your achievement!  Please review the following information as you prepare for your Commencement Ceremony.

Student Attendance
Any graduate who is not able to attend his or her Commencement ceremony must notify the appropriate Dean's Office in writing by April 15th.

If you graduated in fall or summer, please contact your Dean's office in writing if you DO plan to attend the Commencement ceremony in May.

Clearing your Account
In order to participate in graduation exercises and/or receive your diploma, your student account balance must be paid in full by April 15.  Please contact Lee Tabor with any questions at 704-337-2467.

Academic Regalia
Caps and gowns should be ordered online at before March 21st.  You will need to provide payment (cash, check, or credit card) when the items are picked up in the Student Bookstore beginning April 24.  Graduates will not be permitted to participate in their Commencement ceremony or Baccalaureate without a cap and gown.  Please contact the Student Bookstore with any questions at 704 337 2413.

Underneath the cap and gown, women should wear a dress, skirt or nice slacks, and men should wear dark trousers.  Dark shoes are appropriate for all.  Large earrings are not allowed and no corsages should be pinned to the gown.  Queens requires that all graduates be dressed appropriately in order to participate in Commencement exercises.

NOTE: There is a Queens tassle provided within your cap and gown order.  Queens does not allow the ordering of special tassles or adornment of the cap.

Graduates earning master's degrees will be hooded on stage as part of the ceremony on Friday evening, May 2. Please bring your cap with you to rehearsal to practice the hooding ceremony.

Stoles, Cords, and Caps
Only stoles worn by members of the Mortar Board and cords issued by academic honor societies are permitted. Stoles and cords for Greek organizations, athletic teams, or other interest organizations should not be worn as part of the ceremony. Caps worn during the graduation exercises should not be adorned or altered in any way.

Fun Facts About Commencement:

University Seal
The current university seal was updated in 2005 to reflect the new name of the institution, Queens University of Charlotte.  In 1930, Queens College merged with Chicora College of Columbia, South Carolina, whose motto was transferred to the Queens College seal and still remains today: Non ministrari, sed ministrare.  Translated from Latin, this means "Not to be served, but to serve."
