Writing Workshops with Tommy Tomlinson

Tommy TomlinsonCharlotte Observer columnist Tommy Tomlinson is creative writing at its best.  In his writing workshops, you will have the unique opportunity to learn from a tremendous writer and speaker.  Your inner creativity will be inspired by this amazing storyteller.

Tomlinson, a University of Georgia graduate, Harvard fellow and Pulitzer Prize finalist, is a celebrated journalist with over 25 years of professional writing experience -- 21 of which are with the Charlotte Observer.  He believes he is the only journalist in history to cover the Super Bowl, the Bassmaster Classic (fishing), and the National Spelling Bee in the same year.

Writing in 3-D: How to Make Your Words Jump Off the Page
 Catapult your writing into another dimension and learn creative writing tips to make your words jump off the page. In this workshop, Tomlinson will cover:
●   Reporting: How to look at the world, train your eye for detail, conduct interviews, and filter the signal from the noise. Includes exercise in noticing your surroundings, looking closely and thinking in metaphor.
●   Words on the Page:
How to put information on the page truly and vividly and tell a compelling story.
●   Revising: How to look at your own work with a critical eye, and learn the tools to make it better.
●   Creativity:
How to tackle writer's block and clear the path toward a creative life. Includes exercise in free writing.

Writing What You Feel: Techniques for the Personal Essay

Learn how to write about the things that matter most to you. In this personal essay workshop, you will learn how to structure an argument and how to make your words rise above the noise. Additionally, Tomlinson will discuss:
●   How to get your true feelings onto the page
●   How to make your points in a convincing way
●   Writing techniques to make your essay stand out
●   Dealing with feedback once your essay is out in the world

A Writer's Life: Building a Career as a Professional Writer
Learn essential tips and hear real life experiences on how to make it as a professional writer. In this workshop, you will learn everything you need to know about pursuing a writing career, including:
●   What you should write about
●   How to gain a wider audience
●   How to build your daily writing routines
●   Essential writing tips for the professional writer

A program coordinator will e-mail you confirmation and parking information after you register for a course online.

Cancellation and Refund Policy: There is a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellations that are received at least 10 business days prior to the first day of class will receive a refund, minus the $50 cancellation fee. No refunds or make-up classes will be given after that time. If you do not officially withdraw from or attend a course, you are still responsible for the payment. If the course is canceled for any reason, you will be notified and your entire tuition fee will be refunded.
