Poetry Writing for Beginners, with Tony Abbott

Whether you are a novice or wish to refresh your skills, this introductory poetry course is designed to inspire the poet within and provide insights into the craft of writing. It covers the basic tools and techniques every poet needs on the journey toward fulfillment and publication. 

Expect in-class writing, handouts and workshop critique (the close reading and discussion of student poems) to aid in revision. 

This class is limited to eight students.

Availability/Register

Tony Abbott is the Charles A. Dana Professor of English Emeritus at Davidson College, where he served as Chair of the English Department and Director of Creative Writing for many years.  He taught in the English Department from 1964 through 2001.  Dr. Abbott is the author of two novels and four books of poems.  His most recent book, The Man Who, was honored by the Poetry Council of North Carolina as the best book of poems published by a North Carolinian in 2007. Additionally, in March of 2008, he received the Irene Blair Honeycutt Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature from Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte.

Tony was featured in a Charlotte Observer article on July 1, 2012 regarding his newest book of poetry, "If Words Could Save Us." This book was recently named co-winner of the 2012 Brockman-Campbell Award, which is given to the best book of poetry published in North Carolina the previous year. Read the article.

You will be contacted with a confirmation and parking information after you register for a course online.

Cancellation and Refund Policy: There is a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellations that are received at least 10 business days prior to the first day of class will receive a refund, minus the $50 cancellation fee. No refunds or make-up classes will be given after that time. If you do not officially withdraw from or attend a course, you are still responsible for the payment. If the course is canceled for any reason, you will be notified and your entire tuition fee will be refunded.
