Dr. Gayle L. Casterline, PhD, RN, CNE, is an associate professor at Queens University of Charlotte and teaches in the BSN and MSN programs. She has 20 years of experience in nursing education and academic administration and has taught in universities in Ohio, California, Louisiana, Illinois, and the Carolinas.

Her undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing were earned at the University of Pittsburgh. She has a doctorate in nursing from Loyola University Chicago, where Dr. Rosemarie Rizzo Parse chaired her dissertation committee. She studied with Dr. Jean Watson in Boulder Colorado and was chosen by Dr. Watson as a faculty associate for the new Watson Caring Science Institute in 2008. Dr. Casterline currently speaks locally, nationally, and internationally on Caring Science.

Dr. Casterline began her career specializing in the care of the rheumatology client at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She has presented and published extensively on arthritis, lupus and scleroderma management. She was awarded an Arthritis Foundation Research Fellowship in 1982, and received the State of Ohio Governor's Special Recognition Award in 1988. Additionally, she was a research nurse at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, focusing on the care of children and adults with hemophilia and HIV/AIDS. Her current research interests include spirituality and health, pain management, and caring science in nursing education, leadership, and clinical practice. She is particularly interested in mentoring students and staff nurses to use evidence and develop theory-based research protocals to improve clinical outcomes and generate nursing knowledge.

Dr. Casterline was an AACN Leadership Fellow (2007-08) and a past president of Sigma Theta Tau International, Mu Rho Chapter. She is currently a member of Eta and Mu Psi chapters. She is an active member of the Board of Directors for the International Association of Human Caring. Dr. Casterline also is a site visitor for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Dr Casterline lives in Spartanburg with her husband, dog, and lovebirds. She has two grown sons, one in SC and one in CA. Self-care strategies include music, gardening, crafting, and reading. She volunteers in the community as a Stephen Minister and sings in the church choir.
