English, Drama & Creative Writing Department
Ready for Anything
The English, Drama, and Creative Writing Department invites you to explore how writers draw readers into their study of the world through stories, poems, essays, plays and novels. You will explore a gallery of intriguing characters’ tales - heroes, wanderers, scoundrels and seekers.
The department offers majors in literature, drama and creative writing, all leading to a versatile Bachelor of Arts degree. Minors include creative writing, dramatic literature, English, technical theatre, theatre performance. A certificate in creative writing is available through Hayworth College for Adult Studies.
Through emphasis on critical thinking and careful analysis, English majors develop both a historical knowledge of the development of literature and an intimate understanding of its many genres and forms. You’ll also become a better author yourself as you apply your new knowledge to your craft.
Outside of the classroom, you’ll have the opportunity to give dramatic performances in the Hadley Theatre and interact directly with distinguished writers brought to campus through the department’s Reading Series. You can also join the “Signet” staff to produce our undergraduate art and literary magazine.
English majors may obtain a teaching license at the high school level in coordination with the Cato School of Education.
Outstanding students are eligible for membership in Alpha Psi Omega, a national drama honor society, and Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society.
Finding Your PathQueens’ students in English, drama and creative writing are ready for a broad range of careers, as well as graduate study in law, literature, composition theory, drama, theater and creative writing.
