Degrees & Programs

The Department of English, Drama and Creative Writing offers three majors leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree: Drama, English-Creative Writing, and English-Literature. Courses offered in the department include composition, literature, creative writing, film and dramatic arts.

The study of English focuses on the various ways that human beings have sought to understand their lives and the world through the writing of stories, poems, essays, plays and novels. The majors offered by the Department of English, Drama, and Creative Writing provide both a historical knowledge of the development of literature and an understanding of the different forms and styles of literature, as well as development of skill in the craft of writing and practice and development of skills in taking plays from page to stage. These majors develop the skills in close reading, careful analysis and forceful, articulate writing that are necessary for a broad range of careers. They also prepare students for specific graduate programs such as law school and graduate study in literature, composition theory, drama, theater, creative writing and American Studies.

The department also houses a number of minors, including American Literature, British Literature, Creative Writing, Dramatic Literature, Theatre Performance, and Technical Theater. Each semester, the department sponsors student dramatic performances as well as the English Department Reading Series, which brings visiting writers to campus. All students in the department are encouraged to attend. Outstanding students of writing, literature and drama are eligible for membership in Alpha Psi Omega, a national drama honor society, and Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society.
