The Music Department provides a superior foundation for students who wish to become performers, teachers, therapists or music scholars. Students become more musically literate and explore what will become a lifelong appreciate for the art. Majors are offered in music and music therapy, with minors available in music, music theatre and music history.

Not only will music majors perform in regular recitals, you’ll also have the chance to hear a variety of live musical performances by special ensembles, individual majors, and music groups from across the Carolinas. Further, the Friends of Music at Queens bring outstanding professional musicians from around the world to perform for students and the community.    

Music Therapy

A distinguishing feature of the Music Department at Queens is our music therapy program. Simply defined, music therapy uses musical experiences to help people with special needs from diseases like autism, Alzheimer’s or epilepsy to those with serious head injuries.

Queens is the only private university in North Carolina to offer a degree in music therapy, and is unique in the nation because students begin their clinical work during their freshman year.

In keeping with the university’s motto “Not to be served, but to serve,” Queens’ music therapy clinic was the first in the state to offer services to the community on a university campus. Each year, our students and faculty serve more than 150 patients.   

Using Your Music or Music Therapy Degree

 Many of our music majors have gone on to graduate studies in music and music therapy at universities including the Peabody Conservatory, University of Southern California at Los Angeles, and Florida State University.  Others have built successful careers as performers, instructors, music teachers, music therapists, composers, church music directors and scholars.
