Dr. Stephanie Lawrence-White is an Associate Professor of Music and Department Chairperson for Music, Theatre, and Dance at Queens University of Charlotte. She teaches the historical musicology and piano courses and mentors students in the field of musicology.
Dr. Lawrence-White holds a B.A. degree from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts and an M.A. and Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She received a J. William Fulbright Scholarship to Florence, Italy and was later awarded a UNCF/Mellon Faculty Residency Grant to Florence. She contributed an essay on “The Archive of Santissima Annunziata” to a numbered monograph on the sacred archives of Florence for the quarterly publication “Civiltà Musicale” of the publishing house LoGisma in Florence. In 2009, Dr. Lawrence-White also received a grant to attend a Salzburg Global Seminar entitled, Traduttore Traditore: Recognizing and Promoting the Critical Role of Translation in a Global Culture at the Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg, Austria.
Though her research has primarily focused on the Franciosini ensemble and music from the Ospedale degli Innocenti in Florence, she has also focused on African-American music. She has written and presented on the piano works of Florence Price and contributed the entry on Music of the Sea Islands to the Encyclopedia of African American Music.
