Phyllis Pharr, long-time tennis teacher, coach and clinician, has given up the courts for the swimming pool and classroom. Water Aerobics and Heart Health, CPR, and First Aid now occupy her teaching time.
Pharr has three Queens University of Charlotte teaching awards to her credit; the most recent being the Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Award. Half of the $15,000 award goes to a departmental project of the recipient's choice. Thanks to the generosity of the Hamiltons, Ovens Student Pool now has a pool chair lift that can be used by students with injuries or disabilities. Another portion of the money will pay for a visiting modern-dance company to perform and give master classes during the fall semester of 2010.
A former president of the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, Pharr was professionally active for many years, including serving as State Tennis Chairwoman for the North Carolina Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, and as a member of the ditorial boards of several professional publications. In February 2010, she was inducted into the inaugural class of Queens' Athletics Hall of Fame.
One of her strong outside interests is the environment and our responsibility to it.
