Political Science & International Studies Department

Synthesizing Knowledge to Understand Our World
|
Political science is the systematic study of government and politics. It’s about the struggle between power and representation, authority and freedom, security and peace – all the core issues of public life. Queens offers a wide-ranging study of local, national and international politics and government through majors in political science or international studies. Minors are offered in American political studies, ethnic and minority studies, European political studies, international studies, political economy, political science, and pre-law. Political Science The major in political science emphasizes the empirical, analytical, comparative and normative investigation of political issues, policies and systems in the world. Attention is given to critical thinking, problem-solving, research and writing skills. Pick from tracks in American politics or comparative politics. International Studies The International Studies major emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to global issues and geographical regions of the world, and encourages appreciation of other cultures. A residency requirement allows students to immerse themselves in the culture and language of their choice. Tracks are available in Asian studies, developing countries, Europe, international relations and Latin America. Using Your Degree No matter what field you chose after graduation, a degree in political science or international studies will help you develop essential skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, research and writing. Our graduates have applied those strengths to graduate study at prestigious universities and in careers in fields as diverse as government service, diplomacy, international business, politics, law, journalism, and education. |
