SPAN 103 Spanish for Health Professionals
Introduction to Spanish for Health Professionals: Introduction to vocabulary needed in situations often encountered in the medical field. Students will increase their command of Spanish oral and written communication while using vocabulary pertinent to their expertise. Prerequisite: SPAN 101 or permission of the department. Successful completion of this course would fulfill the general education requirement in foreign language for graduation. 3 hrs.
SPAN 220 Intermediate Spanish I
Intermediate Spanish I: Review and more advanced study of the language with the goal of preparing students for the demanding setting of upper level classes. Through the use of literature, history and culture of the 21 countries where Spanish is spoken, students increase reading comprehension, expand vocabulary, improve both oral and written linguistic expression, increase aural comprehension and review grammatical structures. 3 hrs.
SPAN 230 Intermediate Spanish II
Intermediate Spanish II: Review and more advanced study of the language with the goal of preparing students for the demanding setting of upper level classes. SPAN 231 Intermediate Span for Health Care
Intermediate Spanish for Health Care: This course is designed primarily to meet the needs of Health Care Professionals and students who anticipate contact with Spanish-speaking patients. Emphasis is placed on the use of medical vocabulary as well as practical language that will be used in clinical settings. Prerequisite: SPAN 220 or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 270 Intermediate Topics in Spanish
Intermediate Topics in Spanish Studies: Course designed to address a specific topic or area of Spanish/Latin American Studies at the intermediate level. Topic will be announced the semester preceding the offering. May be repeated with different topics. Repeatable for a total of 15 hrs. 3 hrs.
SPAN 310 Advanced Grammar and Translation
Advanced Grammar and Translation: A thorough review and expansion of Spanish grammar with emphasis on translation. This course fulfills the writing intensive course requirement. Prerequisite: SPAN 231 or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 320 Advanced Composition
Advanced Composition: Application of the principles of Spanish grammar through writing to increase fluency. This course fulfills the writing intensive course requirement. Prerequisite: SPAN 231 or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 333 Textual Analysis & Crit. Aspects
Textual Analysis and Critical Aspects: Development of reading skills through the study of various journalistic, historical and literary texts in order to increase vocabulary and enhance comprehension. Prerequisite: SPAN 231 or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 340 Advanced Conversation
Advanced Conversation: Advanced oral training through discussions, debates and presentations with stress on pronunciation, intonation and correct modes of expression. Prerequisite: SPAN 231 or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 341 Spanish Literary Classics
Spanish Literary Classics: Consideration of major literary works from various periods of Spanish/Spanish American literature chosen for their values as contribution to world literature. Prerequisite: SPAN 231 or permission of instructor.3 hrs.
SPAN 349 Commercial Spanish
Commercial Spanish: A study of the structure and style of Spanish business letters, routine messages and communication. Emphasis on commercial, banking and telecommunication terminology. Prerequisite: SPAN 231 or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 350 Hispanic Literature
Hispanic Literature: The study of major literary works with the goal of understanding some of the important cultural, socioeconomic and political ideas that have shaped the societies of Spanish speaking countries. Prerequisite: SPAN 231 or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 362 Span-American Civ & Cultures
Spanish-American Civilization and Cultures: A course designed to give students a better understanding of the history and civilization of Spanish-America and to increase their knowledge of general Hispanic cultures. Prerequisite: SPAN 230 or permission of instructor. Prerequisite: SPAN 231 or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 370 Topics in Spanish Studies

SPAN 371 Advanced Spanish for Health Care
Advanced Spanish for Health Care: This course focuses on communication among health care professionals and Spanish-Speaking patients. Intercultural issues are emphasized. Prerequisite: SPAN 231, or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 372 Elementary Translating
Elementary Translating: Comparative analysis of translated texts, questions of restructuring texts and adding or subtracting material, style/audience relationship, simple translations from source language to English, and sight translation. Prerequisite: One 300 level class or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 374 Advanced Translating
Advanced Translating: Study of professional journals in the field of translation, specific problems of source/target language equivalents, expansion of working dictionaries, oral reports on work in progress, and translating of substantial text(s) in field of specialization. Texts may be scientific, technical, commercial, scholarly or literary, depending on field of specialization. Prerequisite: One 300 level class or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 400 Directed Readings In Spanish
Directed Readings in Spanish: Directed study of a topic requiring the use of Spanish-language sources. May be repeated with different topics. Permission of instructor. Repeatable for a total of 36 hrs. 1-3 hrs.
SPAN 401 Independent Practicum
Independent Practicum: An independent study of a topic of interest to a student or an internship. Projects must require the use of the target language (Spanish). May be repeated with different topics. Permission of instructor. Repeatable for a total of 36 hrs. 1-3 hrs.
SPAN 410 Intensive Grammatical Structures I
Intensive Grammatical Structures I: Intensive grammatical review with emphasis on the more difficult concepts of the Spanish grammar such as the subjunctive mood, relative pronouns and tense sequencing. Emphasis will be on the development of listening, reading and writing of these critical issues. Students will participate in various forms of presentations that target these complex grammatical concepts. This course fulfills the writing intensive course requirement. Prerequisite: One 300 level class or permission of instructor.3 hrs.
SPAN 420 Intensive Grammatical Structures II
Intensive Grammatical Structures II: Intensive grammatical review with emphasis on the more difficult concepts of the Spanish grammar such as the subjunctive mood, relative pronouns and tense sequencing. Spanish-American Poetry: A study of Spanish-American poetry from different historical periods. Prerequisites: SPAN 310 and 320 or permission of instructor. Prerequisite: One 300 level class or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 441 Spanish-American Novel
Spanish-American Novel: Study of the novel in Spanish America from its beginning through the contemporary period. Prerequisite: SPAN 310 and 320 or permission of instructor. Prerequisite: One 300 level class or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 444 Spanish-American Short Story
Spanish-American Short Story: An overview of the Spanish-American short story to provide students with an appreciation for the development of the genre and its presentation of the social and political realities of the region. Prerequisite: SPAN 310 and 320 or permission of instructor. Prerequisite: One 300 level class or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
SPAN 452 Spanish-American Theater
Spanish- American Theater: This course will examine selected plays written by Spanish-American writers principally outside the United States but it will also treat some U.S. Hispanic playwrights. Prerequisite: SPAN 310 and 320 or permission of instructor. Prerequisite: One 300 level class or permission of instructor. 3 hrs.
