Dr. Siu Challons-Lipton, Chair of the Art Department, earned her D.Phil. in 19th Century Art from the University of Oxford (UK), and her B.A. and M.A. in Baroque Art from McGill University (Canada). She also trained at Sotheby's London in 19th-and 20th-century Decorative Arts.

She is on the Board of Directors and the Education Committee of the Board of Trustees of the Mint Museum, a Trustee on the Board of Charlotte Preparatory School, and on the Steering Committees of Arte Latino Now and Arte Si. She is also a reader for fellowship applications to the National Humanities Center.

She has lectured nationally and internationally, from the Oxford Roundtable, to HERA-the Humanities, Education and Research Association, SECAC-the South Eastern College Art Association, the International Visual Literacy Association, the Black Mountain College Conference, and the Lilly Conference. In 2011 she was on the steering committee that brought TEDx to Charlotte and yearly supports student participation in conferences, including the Mint Museum Regional Collegiate Art History Symposium.

Her research interests include: 19th-Century Academic and Realist Art, Black Mountain College of North Carolina, and pedagogy, including Critical and Creative Thinking and Visual Literacy. She published a book on The Scandinavian Pupils of the Atelier Bonnat, 1867-1894 (2002). More recent publications include a book chapter, “Critical Thinking, Critical Looking: Key characteristics of an educated person,” in Cases on Teaching Critical Thinking through Visual Representation Strategies (IGI Global, 2014), and the following articles: “Creativity and the Transformation of Higher Education: The need for a Black Mountain College Approach,” in the Oxford Forum on Public Policy (2013), “Visual Literacy and the digital native: Another look,” Journal of Visual Literacy (2013), and “Helping Students Transition to Critical and Creative Thinking at the Intersection of Communication and Art,” International Journal of Humanities and Social Science (2012). She is also co-editor of a case-book on Combating Budget Cuts and Funding Challenges in Arts Education for IGI Global (to be published Fall 2015).

Her scholarship and teaching is inter-disciplinary and collaborative in nature. She teaches classes in Art History and Arts Leadership as well as the General Education program. Having grown up around the world, spending her childhood in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Pacific, she has a particular interest in global issues. It's not surprising that one of her greatest passions is to travel, and to learn about new cultures, languages and, of course, artistic expressions.
