Honoring a well respected journalist and cherished member of the Queens University of Charlotte faculty, the Wendy Waite scholarship is awarded to a deserving junior (two or more years) or senior (for one year) who demonstrates promise, a commitment to journalism, and a record of outstanding performance.

Wendy Waite, who died of ovarian cancer in June 2005, was a professor of communication at Queens from 1989 to 2005. In her time at Queens, she inspired and captivated many with her writing, public speaking, and genuine kindness.

Students who have completed the following requirements no later than May of the academic year in which they are applying are eligible for the Wendy Waite Journalism Scholarship Fund:

  • 52 or more credit hours
  • Declared major or concentration in Communication with Journalism track
  • Demonstrated academic excellence (GPA minimum 3.0)
  • Demonstrated significant accomplishment in journalism writing (e.g. Queens Chronicle or other published works)
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills in application and essay
  • Demonstrated integrity, motivation, and curiosity according to references
  • Intend to serve on the Queens Chronicle staff at least one semester per year
  • Intend to remain at Queens for at least one full academic year

To apply students must submit a completed application form including a written statement explaining why they want and are qualified for the scholarship (800-1200 words) and three (3) samples of college-level writing including at least one news story. Additionally, the student will request and submit two letters of recommendation, one from a faculty member in the Knight School of Communication and one from a faculty member not in the Knight School of Communication.
