Your time in Italy might leave you dizzy with the sight of so many historical artworks, buildings and towns. You’ll definitely see why this country is on many people’s short list of must-sees.

Venice Venice
This northern Italian “city of canals” along the Adriatic Sea was once a major maritime power. Now it’s known as one of the world’s most romantic cities.
Amalfi Coast Amalfi Coast
The stunning coastline of the Sorrento Peninsula, with villages built among the cliffs. Its appeal has attracted great artists and writers, along with tourists.
Pompeii Pompeii
An archaeological site of a Roman town destroyed in a volcanic eruption. Much of Pompeii has been excavated, though work still continues. The site is a fascinating glimpse of a community in the Roman Empire.
Saint Peter’s Basilica Saint Peter’s Basilica
This late-Renaissance church dominates the Vatican City and is a major pilgrimage site for Catholics around the world. Tradition holds that the body of Saint Peter, one of Christ’s 12 apostles, is buried below the dome.
Sistine Chapel Sistine Chapel
Papal chapel in the Vatican Palace that holds Michelangelo’s masterpiece; the ceiling’s frescoes depict biblical stories.
Colosseum Colosseum
The remains of a Roman amphitheater considered to be the ancient empire’s greatest work of architecture. In its earliest years, it was the scene of gladiator competitions and other “entertainment.”

Siena Siena
A medieval city in Tuscany, Siena prides itself in its Middle-Ages history.
Pantheon Pantheon
One of the best preserved ancient Roman buildings, it went up in 27 B.C. as a temple to all Roman gods. Rebuilt in the second century A.D., it’s known for its unreinforced concrete dome. 
San Gimignano San Gimignano
Medieval hill town in Tuscany that maintains a historical air and a collection of well-known towers.
