Robben Island Museum Robben Island Museum
A former prison that once held Nelson Mandela, later South Africa’s first black president, this site tells the story of apartheid and the roots of the end of racial segregation. Prisoners once worked in the island’s quarries, where they also discussed resistance.
Kruger National Park Kruger National Park
This massive park between the Crocodile and Limpopo rivers supports numerous ecosystems and vast numbers of plants and animals, including leopards and elephants. It’s also the site of multiple archaeological sites, including a 12th century village.

The Sterkfontein Valley, where Dr. Robert Broom found the first known adult cranium of an “ape man” in the Sterkfontein Caves. Today, it’s one of the world’s most productive paleontological sites.
