Important Information about Verification
The Federal Government selects a certain number of Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) applicants for a process called 'verification'. For those students whose FAFSA is selected, the school is required to verify some or all of the information provided on the FAFSA. It is Queens University of Charlotte's policy to complete the verification process before awarding a student any federal aid, or Queens University of Charlotte need- based aid.
INCOMING FRESHMAN AND TRANSFERS will receive an award letter even if they are selected for verification. However, the award information is preliminary and contingent upon completion of the verification process. Failure to complete the verification process by August 1st will result in all federal, state and institutional need based aid being removed from the student account and any resulting balance will be immediately due in full.
If a FAFSA is flagged for verification by the government, the student will be notified on the Student Aid Report (SAR) received in response to the original FAFSA filing. The school is also notified. All students selected for verification will receive a letter from Queens advising them that we have received their FAFSA information and that they have been selected. The letter will indicate the documentation needed for us to complete the verification process.
While some requirements vary, ALL students selected for verification must complete a Verification Worksheet. Please review your letter carefully to determine which of the worksheets you are required to complete and submit as part of your total documentation requirements. There are ten verification worksheets for you to choose from - five for Dependent students and five for Independent students. The letter you received from Queens advising you that you were selected for verification indicates whether you need the Dependent or Independent student version of the worksheet. In addition, your SAR indicates whether the federal government considered you a Dependent or Independent student. Your letter from Queens will also tell you which version (V1, V2, V3, V4 or V5) you need to complete under the dependent or independent category.

The fastest way to transmit documentation would be to scan the information and email it to the Queens University of Charlotte Student Financial Services email address firstname.lastname@example.org . A hard copy with original signatures can then be mailed to the above address.
For 2013-2014, information to be verified includes number of household members; number of household members (excluding parents) who will be enrolled at least half-time in a degree, diploma or certificate program at a postsecondary educational institution any time between July 1, 2013, and June 30, 2014; whether food stamp program (SNAP) benefits were received by any household member in 2011 or 2012; and child support paid to another household in 2012 due to separation or divorce. For 2012 federal income tax return filers, additional income-related information to be verified includes adjusted gross income, U.S. income tax paid, untaxed IRA distributions, untaxed pensions, education credits, IRA deductions, and tax-exempt interest income. Income earned from work must be verified for non-filers of U.S. income tax returns.
Income-related information for U.S. income tax return filers is verified either through the FAFSA IRS data retrieval process or through an official IRS tax return transcript.
To complete the IRS data retrieval (if you did not do so when you first filed your FAFSA), go to www.fafsa.gov, log in to your FAFSA record, select "Make FAFSA Corrections", and navigate to the Financial Information section of the form. From there, follow the instructions to determine if you are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) to transfer 2012 IRS income tax information into your FAFSA. It takes up to two weeks for IRS income information to be available for the IRS DRT for electronic IRS tax return filers and up to eight weeks for paper IRS tax return filers.

For federal Pell Grant eligible students whose application has been selected for verification, verification must be complete by a deadline published annually in the Federal Register (generally no later than 120 days after the last day of enrollment during the academic year). For all other federal aid, and for Queens' need-based aid, verification must be completed by the last day of enrollment during the academic year. Failure to complete verification will render the student ineligible for aid for that academic year.
If a FAFSA transaction is selected for verification after an award has already been made and/or disbursed and requested verification documents are not provided, any undisbursed award will be canceled. No additional federal, state or institution need-based funds will be disbursed until verification has been completed.
If verification causes a change in the student's eligibility for federal, state or institutional need-based funds, the student will be notified that their financial aid package has changed.
