Letter from Friends of Music President
Fran Mathay, President, Friends of Music 2012-2013
"Nothing Endures but Change"
For the past thirty years, under the talented artistic direction of Dr. Paul Nitsch, Friends of Music at Queens has flourished, and a special audience of chamber music enthusiasts has enjoyed our concert series. Our performance offerings have been unrivaled in chamber music quality and brilliance in this community.
When the organization was founded, there were relatively few cultural offerings at Queens and in Charlotte. Today arts audiences have a wide range of experiences to enjoy and support. This range is reflected in a new initiative at Queens, launched by the College of Arts and Sciences, under the direction of its dean, Dr. Lynn Morton, to serve the university and the community as an intellectual and cultural hub that connects the arts, sciences, and humanities.
Excited by this new venture, the Friends of Music board recently voted to disband as a stand-alone entity and join forces with other Friends groups to support "The Arts at Queens." This new organization will encourage collaboration across the arts - visual, performing, and literary - and coordinate events at Queens designed to reach a wider audience than any one arts organization could do on its own.
Though the Friends of Music concert series ends with the Cavani String Quartet on October 5, the university will continue to offer through The Arts at Queens a wide variety of musical experiences, including dance, musical theatre, jazz, and our personal favorite - classical.
We salute the many patrons, board members and Queens University of Charlotte faculty and staff who contributed to Friends of Music over our long history of providing extraordinary chamber music concerts. Our change today is an opportunity to expand musical enrichment and broaden our reach in the world of the arts.
In a few weeks you will be hearing from Dean Morton about the exciting plans for The Arts at Queens. We look forward to supporting this organization and enjoying the many new offerings it will bring to our community.
President, Friends of Music, 2012-2013
