Through the support of many generous, committed donors, Belk Chapel will be beautifully transformed with a new $1.4 million addition, which includes a Center for Faith and Outreach named after Queens President Pamela Davies.
On Thursday, October 17, 2013, Board of Trustees Chair Michael Marsicano, Ph.D. shared this special news during the annual fall board meeting, surprising everyone in the room, especially President Davies.
I want to diverge from our agenda for just a few moments for a surprise announcement.
The spiritual life of Queens is deeply rooted in our past and profoundly important to our future. Belk Chapel has been and will always be the spiritual heart of our campus. It is a Charlotte landmark. For some time we have been planning to transform Belk Chapel into an even more beautiful, vibrant and prominent place on campus.
Plans call for a $1.4 million addition to include a prayer room, a classroom for religious studies, a meeting room, offices, rest rooms and a large, open fellowship space. We are also creating a formal Center for Faith and Outreach to be housed in Belk Chapel but not bound by its lovely spaces. This programmatic Center is designed to enrich the spiritual life of the Queens community and to encourage the spiritual growth, development and expression of our students.
"The spiritual life of Queens is deeply rooted in our past and profoundly important to our future. Belk Chapel has been and will always be the spiritual heart of our campus."
- Michael Marsicano, Ph.D., Chair, Board of Trustees
Michael Tarwater and his wife Ann were the first to raise their hands in generous support of this project. The Tarwaters were joined soon after by several members of the Belk Family, Frank Harrison and Coca Cola Consolidated as lead donors toward this dual purpose.
In recent weeks, a number of other Queens friends and family have stepped forward with generous gifts toward the project, and in so doing, have helped us surpass our goal.
So, today we improve a much loved campus landmark. We pay tribute to the 125-year history of generosity of one family by expanding the Chapel that is graced with the name Belk. And, at the same time, we enhance program offerings for our students on their spiritual journey with our new Center for Faith and Outreach.
Just like Belk Chapel, the Center deserves a name worthy of its purpose. For her strong faith, for the spiritual example she provides our students and for her deep love of Queens, I am pleased to announce that the Center for Faith and Outreach will honor Pamela Davies and heretofore be known as The Pamela Davies Center for Faith and Outreach."
