Knight School Launches Community Partnership With Google Fiber

The Knight School, Digital Charlotte, and Google Fiber announced its first Community Leaders Program partnership in Charlotte early in February. The partnership is the latest of Google Fiber's nationwide programs, but it is the first integration of a college course specifically dedicated to help Charlotte residents achieve digital literacy.

The Community Leaders Program encourages college students to volunteer their time to the community programs designed to bring digital literacy and connectivity to residents who have traditionally been underserved. Knight School Capstone students are the pioneers of this relationship with Google Fiber in Charlotte, and have already begun their work with community partners - Charlotte Housing Partnership, Charlotte Mecklenburg Libraries, Hidden Valley Elementary School, Crossroads Corporation and Latin American Coalition.

Together, Digital Charlotte and Google Fiber staff have trained senior Knight School students to educate Charlotte residents in connectivity and digital media literacy. Two capstone classes have been committed to the partnership to facilitate digital literacy classes and outreach to adults within various communities of Charlotte to mobilize the Knight School's digital inclusion initiative.

More than fifty-thousand households are without internet access in Mecklenburg County, and Google Fiber, Digital Charlotte, and Knight School of Communication place digital inclusion as a core initiative to their missions.
