Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer to speak about 'Operation Dark Heart'November 15, 2010 7:00 PMSykes Auditorium
Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer, the author of the controversial book "Operation Dark Heart," will speak at Queens University of Charlotte on Monday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in Sykes Auditorium. Copies of the book will be on sale at the event which is co-sponsored by the World Affairs Council of the Carolinas.
Shaffer, an intelligence officer, earned a Bronze Star for his two undercover combat tours in Afghanistan. He was part of the "Able Danger" mission which was dedicated to understanding Al Qaeda's inner workings and sharing intelligence data with American defense agencies.
The Pentagon alleged his memoir contained intelligence secrets and bought and destroyed 10,000 copies of its first publication run. It later approved an edited version that was published this fall and debuted on the New York Times Bestseller list at no. 7. It is now at no. 9 and in its fifth printing.
Shaffer is a former Defense Intelligence Agency officer and a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve. He now works for the nonprofit Center for Advanced Defense Studies.
