Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival, one of the oldest music festivals in the US, is a five-week music festival that takes place in the summer in and around the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.

Musicians come from around the country to perform chamber music at the highest level featuring the classic music of the "great" composers as well as interesting pieces not normally heard and also music just recently composed. The Swannanoa players generally include a string quartet, a woodwind quintet, and a pianist, which allows us to perform works of the classic ensembles as well as many interesting combinations.

We generally perform in intimate venues, which allow us to have a closer connection with our audience. Our audiences have been very loyal to us and we look forward to interacting with them personally before and after the concerts.

The festival began in 1970 as Music in the Mountains based in Burnsville, North Carolina and through the thoughtful and dynamic leadership of Frank Ell eventually settled at the beautiful campus of Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa in 1979. Frank led the festival for many years until his retirement after the summer of 2008. William Hoyt is now the Music Director and Paul Nitsch is the general director of the festival.
