Eat better, feel better

Queens Farmers MarketThe market offers fresh produce at wholesale prices.

Folks craving sweet peaches, fresh herbs or juicy pineapple can pick up these items and many more at the Queens Farmers Market on campus every Tuesday. The Blair College of Health and Queens' food service vendor Chartwells are partnering to sponsor the market.

"We want to encourage healthy habits and making nutritious food readily available and affordable to students, faculty, and staff is an important part of our mission," said William Cody, dean of the Blair College of Health which is home to the Wellness Institute.

Produce is priced well below regular retail cost and the variety changes weekly depending on the market.  For example, on one recent Tuesday, a pint of strawberries was only $2.55; peaches were 91 cents each; bananas just 23 cents; and mangos, $1.25. A colorful assortment of fresh basil, broccoli, squash, zucchini, avocados, peppers, and watermelons were also available.

"This not for profit venture enables us to offer top quality produce, much of it locally grown, at below market prices to the Queens community," said Paul Johnson, food service director for Chartwells.

Visit the market Tuesdays in Trexler Courtyard from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. through October. Students can pay with their Lion Dollars and anyone can pay with cash, credit cards and debit cards.
