Chemistry and Environmental Science Department
Engage in research addressing real questions in fields like pharmacology, medicine and forensics.
When you become a chemistry major at Queens, you will be a scientist from day one. You’ll have the opportunity to work with professors on research projects addressing real questions in areas that interest you, like pharmacology, medicine or forensics. You’ll study the five areas of chemistry: organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and biochemistry.
You can choose from two possible degrees – a chemistry bachelor of science (BS) or a bachelor of art (BA). Choose the BS track if you are interested in employment as a chemist, working in research or pursuing graduate studies in chemistry or medicine. Choose the BA track to teach high school chemistry or enter a chemistry-related field like pharmaceuticals or textiles. Our major consists of a curriculum recommended by the American Chemist Society (ACS).
When You Graduate
Our program prepares students for successful careers or graduate study. Our chemistry majors have gone on to the following graduate schools, to name a few:
- University of Minnesota (pharmacy)
- Clemson University
- University of Maryland (medical school)
- University of Utah (medical school)
Others have gone into careers as chemists in companies such as BASF Corporation, Merck and InChem.

Rogers Hall features dynamic, interactive classrooms and lab space, a vibrant state-of-the-art greenhouse and an exterior green wall in the shape of a double helix. The sustainability of the building's features demonstrate the environmental conservation that's taught within its walls.
The Biomanufacturing Lab is a place for course-embedded and independent research projects focused on biodiesel, cellulosic biofuels and bio-products. Core principals of analytical chemistry, biotechnology and engineering are used to construct and critically evaluate systems to produce sustainable fuels, materials and even medicines.
