      Learn through experience.

What do employers want from college graduates? Critical thinking skills, adaptability, speaking and writing skills and persuasive argumentation. How do we know this? Because business leaders tell us over and over. And that's what our curriculum and internship program are designed to teach you.

Queens has a professional internship program that is unique in higher education. First, it is required, not optional. Second, it is experiential in nature, more than academic. However, it does require an introductory course called “The World of Work.” World of Work prepares you to find an internship (and eventually a job!) that will match your major of study and/or career interests and our career center staff assist with the process. Typically, this takes place as soon as the summer before your junior year and you get academic credit for your approved internship experiences. Students can earn up to 10 academic credit hours for internship credit, but are only required to earn four.  That means students can explore several intership sites, gain additional resume building experience and continually grow their network!

Queens interns typically serve in corporate and nonprofit or service organizations in the Charlotte metro area. Opportunities exist beyond Charlotte including international internships and various sites across the country that offer summer internships. Interns are required to submit an internship contract for approval, keep track of work hour logs, as well as two written assignments and a project presentation to share their unique experiences with the Queens community.

Why do we require this?
We believe that our unique experience is the best possible preparation for our graduates to enter the world of work and the realm of responsible citizenship. More than 350 Charlotte-area organizations agree, because they, among others, are the ones who recruit and hire Queens graduates. International internship opportunities have included places like The Wall Street Journal Europe and “The Crocodile Hunter” on Animal Planet.
