Go Team! Go Queens! Go Royals! Cheers for Queens’ athletic teams have echoed on courts and fields, from stands and bleachers throughout the institution’s history.
The 1915 yearbook, the Edelweiss, describes how the Athletic Association was divided into the “Purples” and the “Yellows,” with a loving-cup offered to the side with the most points. The females students competed in popular sports of the day such as roller-skating, where points were awarded for speed, grace and skill, and “basket-ball,” playing games against the Y.W.C.A. and Charlotte High School.
Today, Queens has established a rich and prominent presence among National Collegiate Athletics Association Division II programs throughout the nation. Upon going co-ed in 1987, Queens joined the NCAA Division II, which allows the University to offer athletic scholarships and compete for national championships. The Queens Royals are also a member of the Conference Carolinas. As Queens marks this 20-year anniversary in 2007, the University remains proud of its athletic heritage and the achievements of its 16 varsity sports programs, coaching staff and its student-athletes.
