In the Principles of Accreditation from SACS for Distance Education, there is a requirement for an Intellectual Property policy. Queens does not currently have a published policy. Because the adoption of such a policy will be a long process, we hope to adopt a simple interim policy for next year, returning to the discussion in the Fall.
Please take a look at the following websites for models of two policies. In both, the University does not lay claim to ownership of materials created by a faculty member in the normal course of faculty work, but does require rights to work created by faculty when extra resources or special payment has gone to the faculty working on a special project. This is a fairly generous policy; many Universities lay claim to all of the intellectual property created by faculty. The two sites below should give you an idea of what a copyright/intellectual property policy looks like. We will address this issue in the online intensive discussions this week if time permits.
