Lee Distinguished Professor Award was established in 1990 to recognize the full-time teaching faculty member at Queens University of Charlotte who has done the most to enhance and promote understanding and cooperation between science and mathematics and the other academic divisions of the university.
The award honors the late William S. Lee, retired chairman of Duke Power Company, who served on the Queens Board of Trustees for many years, including four years as chairman. His life and work as an engineer and a scientist were motivated by the vision of a just, enlightened, competent and humane world order.
The 2005 recipient joined the Queens faculty in 1998. She received a bachelor's degree from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a doctor of philosophy from Georgia State University. She has taught at the State University of New York, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Kennesaw Sate University. She also served as director of Medical-Surgical Nursing at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
She is a committed professional, a dedicated teacher and a tireless worker for the benefit of students and an outstanding teacher at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Students rave about her innovative teaching style and her ability to stimulate an excitement about learning. In the words of her students, "questions in her class were met not with a simple answer but with an intellectual exploration of ideas." "She exemplifies dignity and grace tempered with warmth and humor." "She is a wise, valued advisor, an excellent and challenging professor and a knowledgeable, skilled clinical instructor."
She has served the university on numerous committees and has chaired the College Life Board. During her four years as chair of the Nursing Curriculum Committee she oversaw a complete revision of the curriculum. And she was instrumental in organizing Queens' federally funded student-nurse exchange program.
