CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 4, 2007) — In the brief time this recipient has lived in Charlotte, he has already taken on a highly significant leadership role in the community. A gifted and dedicated person, Jim Rogers is working to help both the local and broader communities chart a sound path for the future.
A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Jim Rogers graduated from Emory University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He then earned a J.D. degree from the University of Kentucky, where he was a member of the Kentucky Law Journal and Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society. His experience, energy, intelligence and vision have led him to his current position as chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of Duke Energy.
Duke is only the latest corporation to benefit from Roger’s leadership. Before the merger of Duke Energy and Cinergy, Rogers served as Cinergy chairman and chief executive officer for more than 11 years. Prior to the formation of Cinergy, he joined PSI Energy in 1988 as the company’s chairman, president and chief executive.
Rogers’ role as leader extends far beyond Duke Energy. He is an active community citizen who serves on numerous civic boards. He is co-chairing the Arts & Science Council’s $82.5 million Campaign for Cultural Facilities, continuing the civic leadership he demonstrated in Cincinnati. He chaired the 1997 Greater Cincinnati United Way Campaign, and also received there the 2004 NCCJ Distinguished Service Citation, for his leadership in championing diversity, both in the workplace and in the community, as well as and the 2006 Human Relations Award from the American Jewish Committee, Cincinnati Chapter.
His leadership in the energy field led to his receiving the 2005 Keystone Center Leadership in Industry Award for his longtime leadership on federal environmental and energy issues, including the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and his work on greenhouse gas legislation. He has testified 15 times on energy and environmental policies before congressional committees and has published numerous articles on energy and environmental issues.
One community leader has commented. "Jim Rogers is a highly respected, long-time leader of the electric and gas industries, currently serving as Chairman of the electric industry's trade association; he is a committed and effective advocate for clean, environmentally compatible sources of energy; and he is an active supporter of those institutions which enrich the quality of life in the whole community."
And so it is with great pride, James E. Rogers, that upon the unanimous vote of the faculty and trustees of Queens University of Charlotte, and by the authority vested in me by the trustees and the State of North Carolina, I confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, with all the privileges pertaining thereto.
