The Wayland H. Cato, Jr. School of Education at Queens University of Charlotte
The Wayland H. Cato, Jr. School of Education at Queens University of Charlotte became a separate unit of the University in May, 2008. The founding dean, Dr. Darrel Miller, cites the strong history of education at the university, as well as the mission of the new school to help provide excellent educators for our region’s schools as the key reasons behind establishing the new school.
The Mission:
The mission of the Wayland H. Cato, Jr. School of Education is to prepare culturally responsive educators who are leaders, experts in their fields, and facilitators of learning for all students in a "community of respect." This is consistent with and contributes to the mission of Queens.
The Programs:
Queens’ Wayland H. Cato, Jr. School of Education offers an array of undergraduate and graduate programs:
Queens is one of 18 North Carolina Teaching Fellows campuses. As is true with North Carolina's entire program, the Teaching Fellows program here at Queens is dedicated to recruiting talented high school graduates into the teaching profession and helping them develop the leadership qualities needed to succeed.
In addition, the Public Education Research Institute at Queens is housed within the Cato School of Education. The Institute is dedicated to dealing with key issues affecting local school districts both locally and nationally. The Institute will support research by the school’s students, faculty, and facilitate community education in support of Queens’ role as an educational resource for the community.
