North Carolina Teaching Fellows will live on campus to ensure a connection and commitment to our community. Teaching Fellows will attend Pre-Orientation. During the Pre-Orientation, student activities will include:
-
Overnight stay in residence halls
-
Roommate assignments
-
Information session on the Teaching Fellows Program
-
Placement testing for language and math
-
Advising and class registration
-
Day-long excursion to the National Whitewater Park for leadership training, diversity training and team building (rafting, climbing, low/high ropes course)
-
Tour of Charlotte and cultural activity
Study Abroad
All university students participate in a study abroad program. The program is included in the cost of tuition and takes place during the early summer between the junior and senior years. The Fellows program will take place from May 15 through July 15, allowing fellows to return and participate in the Senior Conference in late July.
Students will travel to Brisbane, Australia, where they will attend classes at the University of the Sunshine Coast, with which the university has an exchange relationship. Students will participate in classes for credit while in Australia. The classes will last six weeks and will be supplemented by travel to historic, cultural, and environmental locales in Queensland and New South Wales.
Commission
The Discovery Trip follows the freshman year for Fellows. This seven-day bus trip in May offers a firsthand look at the state from an economic, educational, and cultural point of view. The Fellows see every possible aspect of the state, including industry, farms, high-tech businesses, corporations, schools and the arts. The Teaching Fellows see the various effects this rich diversity has on our schools. For more information, please contact Gladys Graves at ggraves@ncforum.org
Junior Enrichmentis a summer program for rising juniors. Each Fellow chooses from a list of approximately 30 options, including a four day Outward Bound course, a mountain relaxation excursion, environmental education, various workshops, and numerous opportunities for travel abroad, including credit for study. For more information, please contact Melissa Churchwell at mchurchwell@ncforum.org
Junior Conference is a conference for rising juniors which takes place in late July. At this conference, you will have an opportunity to experience discussions and activities that will increase your knowledge and awareness about, and increase your sensitivity toward, social and cultural diversity. The conference also provides opportunities for networking (NCCAT alumni, speakers), bonding (with your colleagues from across the state), and accountability to the State of North Carolina (General Assembly and the NC Teaching Fellows Commission. For more information, please contact Gladys Graves at ggraves@ncforum.org.
Senior Orientation Week requires each Teaching Fellow to spend one week in a school system, either during spring break of their junior year or summer break prior to their senior year. The experience is designed to give students an introduction to the school community and an understanding of the overall operation of a school district through interaction with a wide range of personnel. Teaching Fellows are often offered paid internships following Orientation Week. For more information, please contact Gladys Graves at ggraves@ncforum.org.
Senior Conference is a professional conference for rising seniors which takes place in late July. At this conference, you will gather information on educational issues, cutting edge techniques, and "words of wisdom" which will aid in your transition into your teaching career. Outstanding teachers identified by the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) and Teaching Fellows graduates serve as facilitators working with small groups of Fellows to discuss concerns related to the real world of teaching.
