Overview
Undergraduate Education Programs at Queens University of Charlotte: • Elementary & Secondary Education - College of Arts and Sciences
The Education Department offers an academic major in education leading to North Carolina Elementary Teacher Licensure (K-6). Students majoring in English, mathematics, biology, social studies or history may choose a concentration leading to North Carolina Secondary Teacher Licensure (9-12). Students majoring in Foreign Language may choose a concentration leading to North Carolina Teacher Licensure (K-12). All programs are approved by the state of North Carolina.
• Elementary & Secondary Education - Hayworth Evening Program
Obtaining a N.C. Class "A" initial teacher license is possible through programs in elementary (K-6); and secondary subject areas (grades 9-12) in English. These programs are approved by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), allowing licensure reciprocity with other states. Teacher licensure may be obtained as part of the Hayworth student's degree. Students pursuing licensure in elementary education (K-6) should major in elementary education. Students pursuing secondary subject licensure (9-12) should major in English and take the appropriate education courses for licensure.
Graduate Education Programs at Queens University of Charlotte:
• Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
The MAT program is designed to offer North Carolina licensure in elementary education to those who have undergraduate degrees in majors other than education. The program is structured in two phases. At the end of Phase I, candidates apply for initial "A" level licensure. Once employed as a teacher, candidates complete Phase II. At the end of Phase II, candidates earn the MAT and upgrade to an advanced masters "M" level license.
• Master of Education in Literacy (MEd.)
The MEd. offers North Carolina Licensure in Reading (K-12) as part of a graduate degree. The MEd. is designed for candidates who hold an undergraduate degree, who hold a clear teaching license in the state of North Carolina, and who have at least two years of teaching experience. The MEd. program consists of 36 hours of coursework, leading to an “M” level license in the state of North Carolina.
• Post Baccalaureate Teacher Licensure Only
In addition to providing graduate programs, the Education Division has developed individual programs for post-baccalaureate, non-degree candidates seeking initial North Carolina Class "A" licensure.
Queens University of Charlotte is accredited by the state of North Carolina to offer licensure in the following areas: • Elementary Education (K-6) • Secondary Education (9-12) in the areas of English, Mathematics, Biology, History, or General Social Studies • Spanish or French (K-12)
