Queens Chamber Singers to perform at Mint Museum of Art
Performance will be during opening reception for new fall exhibit of Lois Mailou Jones’ work
Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 24, 2009) – The Queens University of Charlotte Chamber Singers will perform at the Mint Museum of Art Nov. 13, at 6 p.m. for the opening reception for a retrospective exhibit of paintings by African-American artist Lois Mailou Jones.
The Chamber Singers will perform music inspired by Jones’s travels and art. The Johnson C. Smith University Choir will also perform. These two student musical groups appear as part of the Charlotte Symphony’s “On Campus” project, which brings together The Arts at Queens, area colleges and universities, The Mint Museum and the Levine Museum of the New South. Through a series of connected events, this collaboration explores the theme “changing places” as it informs art and culture.
The Chamber Singers recently embarked on an international tour, performing in Poland and in Prague. They will also perform this repertoire in the spring at Queens.
A pioneering 20th century African-American artist, Jones (1905-1998) “changed places” multiple times in her life, moving from Boston to North Carolina, to Paris and Haiti and Africa. The exhibit features more than 70 works from the artist’s estate as well as from public and private collections, and includes paintings, sketches and textile designs.
The opening is free to members, $10 for adults, $8 for students. RSVP by Nov. 6, at 704-337-2011. Details: www.mintmuseum.org.
