Queens’ MFA in creative writing program brings publishing experts to Charlotte
Panel discussions on writing and editing, and publishing are free and open to the public
Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 27, 2009) – Alumni weekend events for the MFA program in creative writing at Queens University of Charlotte are free and open to the public. Come hear graduates read their poetry and short stories, and get expert advice about editing and getting your work published.
Thursday, November 5
MFA Alumni Reading

The Queens MFA program in creative writing presents a reading by three alumni: Mary Akers, Jessica Handler, and Tom Lombardo. Akers is the author of the short story collection “Women Up on Blocks,” published by Press 53, and co-author of a forthcoming book of nonfiction, “Bury Me Naked.” Handler is the author of the memoir “Invisible Sisters,” published by Public Affairs Press, which portrays the emotional toll that two daughters’ illnesses take on a family living in Atlanta. Kirkus Reviews calls “Invisible Sisters”“a heartfelt, painful family saga, skillfully told by a survivor. Lombardo is the editor of “After Shocks: The Poetry of Recovery for Life-Shattering Events,” published by Sante Lucia Books. He is also the poetry editor for Press 53.

The Queens MFA program in creative writing presents a panel featuring MFA alumni discussing the process of editing and publishing anthologies. Panelists include Jeff Hess, editor of “Home of the Brave: Stories in Uniform,” published by Press 53; Tom Lombardo, editor of “After Shocks: The Poetry of Recovery for Life-Shattering Events,” published by Sante Lucia Books; and Sally Drumm, founder of the Milspeak Writing Workshops and editor of “Milspeak: Warriors, Veterans, Family, and Friends, Writing the Military Experience,” published by Press 53. The panel will also feature alumni contributors to “Making Notes: Music of the Carolinas,” published by Novello Festival Press.

The Queens MFA in creative writing program presents a panel of prominent literary editors and agents discussing developments in book publishing. Panelists include Megan Lynch of Riverhead Books, Tina Dubois Wexler of International Creative Management, Chris Parris-Lamb of The Gernet Company, Peter Steinberg of The Steinberg Agency, and Amy Williams of the McCormick & Williams Literary Agency.
