Be sure to check both the Country Profiles page and the Sites & Destinations page for links to websites where you can find lots of good information on most any country in the world--including Australia!
The "Australia at a Glance" page of the Government's official site is a great place to start your exploration of the land down under; it also has links to other great resources and pages. The official Australian Tourism site will let you learn about "all our states and territories" using their interactive map, as well as provide information on visas, weather, currency, safety and more.
The Government has also created a wonderful site on the country's indigenous cultural heritage with loads of information and links to other related sites. The excellent site from Dreamtime.net provides background on aboriginal culture, stories and timelines. You should also visit the AboriginalArt.com site to learn about the music, art and culture of Australia's aboriginal peoples. For a brief orientation to aboriginal origins and art, check out the OneWorldMagazine site.
For up-to-date info on Australia and current events, you can check the NY Times pages, or, for a more local flavor, browse The Australian (a national paper), the Sydney Morning Herald, the Herald Sun (out of Melbourne) or try the regional Alice Springs News.
Sydney:
The regional New South Wales site on visitnsw.com has information on both Sydney and the surrounding area. The Sydney.com site has pages on getting around, what to see in the city, tours and more.
Learn about the incredible Sydney Opera House at sydneyoperahouse.com and while you are there maybe grab some tickets for a performance while in Sydney! You might want to find information for the Sydney Aquarium and the Powerhouse Museum, both located in Darling Harbor. If you have an interest in contemporary art, check out the site of the Museum of Contemporary Art to see what will be going on while you are there. You can also check out the Australian National Maritime Museum or the Sydney Observatory.
Uluru/Alice Springs:
Learn all about "The Alice" by visiting the regional tourism website for Alice Springs. The site on Uluru/Kata Tjuta National Park will provide information on the flora and fauna of the park, aboriginal culture, etc. Or click here to learn more about Uluru (Ayer's Rock), its history and its relevance to aboriginal culture. Diaminta Tours has a nice site where you can learn about the land systems of the outback.
Cairns/Port Douglas:
The regional Port Douglas + Daintree site is a good starting point for the activities and adventures available to you in Tropical North Queensland. The Daintree Rainforest site has information on the rainforest, aboriginal history in the area, climate and more.
There are several good sites for information on the Great Barrier Reef. The Government site on the GBR is a good place to start. You can also check the Marine Park Authority page for official statistics and information on visiting the reef. GreatBarrierReef.org is a web magazine devoted to this natural wonder. National Geographic has a really nice site on the Great Barrier Reef that includes a "virtual world" where you can see the coral and various species of creatures living in the reef. Or learn about reef formations and the various creatures that inhabit the Great Barrier Reef at the Barrierreefaustralia.com site.
Still haven't found what you are looking for? The Charles Sturt University of Australia has compiled an extremely impressive list of resources--the Guide to Australia--on all things Australian that allows you to search by category--culture, olympic medals, education and much more!
