This nationally-unique 26-day program offers students the chance to live and work in Yap and Kosrae, member states of the Federated States of Micronesia (east of the Philippines and north of Australia).
Surrounded by mangrove forests and beautiful white sand beaches, Yap and Kosrae have a peaceful tropical island lifestyle. Pristine coral reefs and a resident population of manta rays are reasons for Yap being rated one of the top three scuba diving locations in the world. Kosrae is the "forgotten jewel of Micronesia," a magnificent and lush island with rainforests and waterfalls.
Students will work with local Yapese and Kosraean officials, scientists, and students to survey the local landscape and monitor environmental conditions. This effort helps balance the preservation and use of marine and watershed resources. Students live in basic island accommodations close to shops, restaurants, and activities. Weekends and some afternoons are filled with activities such as sea kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, beachcombing, and sightseeing. Students will have adequate free time to gain scuba certification if they wish.
