We reached the halfway point of our trip on Sun May 16, and so far, everything is going extremely well. We have worked several days in the field mapping recently burned areas and invasive species, and have gotten to know our Yapese counterparts. Working in the field has taken us to parts of Yap that tourists never see — from the remote hills of Maap to the beaches of Magachgil. We have discovered Japanese bunkers from WWII and U. S. shell casings from the Army occupation post-1945. It's amazing to think the casings were (probably) untouched since that time. The weather has been mostly dry, although it's raining as I write this.
Last Saturday, we helped clear the Tamilog Stone Path in our village. A very exhausting day that was crowned by pizza at Manta Ray Bay Hotel.
Today is a day off, so most folks are staying at home reading, writing in their journals, or watching a DVD on a laptop. There is always a steady stream of people in the kitchen, fixing sandwiches or asking if there is any more ice cream. We just bought two big tubs of neopolitan yesterday, so there should be some left!
