Dr. Billy O. Wireman, President of Queens College (now Queens University of Charlotte), from 1978 to his retirement in 2002, has been hailed as an imaginative, energetic president who faced many obstacles in bringing life to a small liberal arts college for women. In the book, “The Awakening,” author Jerrold Footlick said, "he (Dr. Wireman) broadened the college’s horizons through an international program, and pragmatic career preparation while strengthening its liberal-arts core. Pragmatically, he introduced male under-graduates to campus, created adult programs and graduate business training. Financially, he stabilized the college by cementing ties with the thriving business community of Charlotte." (fly leaf) |

Honored by University Trustees, community organizations, and international organizations, Dr. Billy O. Wireman received many accolades for his service to the city of Charlotte, to North Carolina and across the world. Dr. Wireman was a frequent travel, trip leader, teacher, and writer on topics of international interest. He held many prestigious positions in organizations and led many service drives and national conferences on issues of importance to the nation and the world.
The Trustees of Queens University of Charlotte saw fit to provide Everett Library with funds to create the Billy O. Wireman Reading Room, a lovely glass encased room to be filled with Dr. Wireman’s memorabilia from his 24 years as President of Queens College. In an effort to honor Dr. Wireman, librarians secured and recreated his office in the Reading Room to reflect his Presidential Office in Burwell Hall where he worked for his 24 years. Included in the Reading Room are his furniture, works of art, photographs of his travels and service activities, and memorabilia. The Room is to be used by library patrons for reading, studying and small group meetings. Dr. Wireman and his wife, Kathy, were present at the dedication of the Reading Room and the Billy O. Wireman Fountain that graces the patio of the front of the Library.
The Room is open during the regular operating hours of Everett Library. To visit the room, contact the Circulation Desk at 704 337 2466. If you wish a tour for additional information, contact Dr. Carol Walker Jordan, 704 337-2400.
In addition to donating his furniture, memorabilia and art works to Everett Library, Dr. Wireman donated his Presidential Papers along with his public records and papers. These materials are available in the Barton Jackson Cathey Archives of Everett Library. Many of these materials have been organized and are available to be searched with the help of a librarian but many others are still being sorted and organized for public viewing. For more information, contact Dr. Carol Walker Jordan, 704 337-2400.
