Collection C-89-2 , Boxes 5
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION Name: Mildred Morse McEwen manuscript Title: Queens College Yesterday and Today Extent: (1980) 5 boxes
Historical Note: Queens University of Charlotte was founded in 1857 as the Charlotte Female Institute. For a few years between 1857 and 1891, it was known as the Institute for Young Ladies, and from 1891 to 1896 it was known as the Seminary for Girls. From 1896 to 1910, it was called the Presbyterian Female College. The name was changed to Presbyterian College for Women in 1910. In 1913 the college was renamed Queens College, and the campus moved from downtown Charlotte to its present location. In 1930 Queens merged with Chicora College for Women of Columbia, SC. From 1930 to 1939 it bore the name Queens-Chicora College. From 1939 to 2002 the name remained Queens College. In June 2002, the college acknowledged its University status by adopting the name Queens University of Charlotte.
Scope & Content: Original photographs from 1860 to 1965, galley proofs of Dr. McEwen's text, original copy of the text, and typescript copy of the text. Contains some photographs which were not used in the manuscript.
Arrangement: By Folder, type of material, chronologically.
Provenance: The Archives for Queens University of Charlotte was established by Rena Chambers Harrell, first librarian for Queens University of Charlotte, and was maintained by the staff of Everett Library. While every effort was made to obtain and preserve materials relating to the history of the college, the archival materials were not systematically organized prior to 1989.
Dr. Mollie C. Davis, Professor of History, was organizing Archives when Hurricane Hugo struck Charlotte in September 1989. The stored materials being assessed were sent off-site to be fumigated and re-boxed. A preliminary list of materials in the Archives formed the basis for work with the collection in place before 1997. These boxes constitute part of the original college archives. Property rights are held by the Archives, Everett Library, Queens University of Charlotte. Photocopies may be made for research purposes, but proper attribution is required if they are used in publication.
Finding Aid: Printed guide available in the Archives Reading Room.
