Acrylic paints, a respected medium, have a range of use allowing them to be applied like watercolors or used like oils. In this course, learn about the basic techniques of acrylics and its great flexibility. Fundamentals of drawing, elements of color theory and composition will be presented. Participants will be given the opportunity to explore other capabilities of acrylics such as collage or mixed media application. Supply list sent upon registration.
Instructor: Mary Edith Alexander has an MFA in painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She is a professional painter with more than 10 years of teaching experience and exhibits her work throughout.

Cartooning and Caricature This course is an introduction to the types of cartooning and the techniques for beginning and creating your first cartoon- whether for fun and family or for fame (and profit)! Learn how to draw facial expressions on humans and animals, do caricatures, and explore political cartooning and illustrations for short stories.
Instructor: Loyd Dillon, FIDS, is a published cartoonist whose work has appeared in The Charlotte Observer, Portfolio Magazine, U.U. World Magazine, Pooch Papers and Idiom amongh other publications. Loyd is also a professional interior designer and one of the Center's most popular instructors.

Ceramics - Working on the Potters Wheel
Learn how to produce beautiful ceramics by working on a potters wheel. This course includes demonstrations and individual instruction of both hand building and wheel throwing techniques. The purchase of a basic ceramics tool kit is required.

Masterful Drawing Made Easy
Discover how to develop your own drawing techniques and style. This course will explore basic art elements via a variety of methods such as using graphite, charcoal and colored pencil. An understanding of "art elements", eye and hand coordination and devlopment of techniques will be covered.
Instructor: Lisa Underwood, illustrator and collage artist, has over 20 years of teaching experience and offers workshops throughout the Charlotte area.

Pastels Painting
In these classes, regardless of pastel experience, participants will improve their pastel paintings through exercises, demonstrations and one on one feedback. Students will learn to better work from photographs & from life (including the figure), as well as how to be more spontaneous with their pastels by utilizing color theory & the intrinsic properties of soft pastel. Participants may work independently or on class projects. Supply lists provided upon registration.

Watercolor Beginning
Immerse yourself in a watercolor tradition. Learn the ease and quickness of application through the one-stroke technique, the brilliance of color through the blending of paint and the effects of color and light through wet on wet transparency painting. Theory, demonstrations and exercises are used. Each students will be able to create beautiful mountain landscapes, still life settings or photos. To ensure the most beautiful watercolor painting, the use of good art material from brushes to paint to paper is extremely important. Students need to bring photos, art material and an eye for beauty to class.
