CHARLOTTE, N.C. (February 20, 2006) — Many considered the late Dr. Billy Wireman to be the foundation of Queens University of Charlotte while serving as its president from 1978-2002. So it’s only fitting that his name will be officially placed atop one of Queens’ Georgian brick buildings during a dedication ceremony on May 4, when South Residence Hall is renamed Wireman Residence Hall in his honor. The announcement was made following a resolution unanimously passed on January 27, 2006 by the University’s Board of Trustees.
“Never has any one individual had such an impact on Queens as Dr. Billy Wireman,” added Queens President Dr. Pamela Davies. “His vision was inspiring, his personality was infectious and his commitment was unwavering. By renaming South Residence Hall, Queens guarantees that Dr. Wireman’s legacy will touch the lives of students every day and be remembered by all for years to come.”
Dr. Wireman is admired for the energy, commitment and faith that he demonstrated while guiding Queens to a new level of excellence. Under his leadership, the University achieved many milestones. His administration saw Queens shift to university status, become a fully co-educational institution, create the John Belk International Program and the McColl Graduate School of Business, develop the Core Program in the Liberal Arts, establish an NCAA Division II athletics program, create the Presidential Scholars program and Hayworth College and found the Learning Society at Queens.
Wireman Residence Hall (formerly South Residence Hall) is Queens University of Charlotte’s newest residence hall. The suite-style building was opened in 2001 and is located on the Residence Hall Quadrangle, adjacent to Wallace Hall and the library. It is the largest residence hall on campus and is home to more than 225 students.
