The James D. Vail III Program of Nursing's four-year baccalaureate degree program leading to a BSN degree prepares students for practice as a professional nurse in a variety of health care settings and specialties. At the completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) for Registered Nurses for entry to practice in any of the United States.
The curriculum also provides graduates with the necessary foundation for graduate study in nursing including nurse practitioner programs. The program of study provides students with rich opportunities for personal and professional development through courses in the humanities; social, behavioral and natural sciences; fine arts; and nursing.
Our location in an urban setting allows students to acquire state-of-the art nursing knowledge and develop their clinical skills in hospitals and community agencies that are leaders in their fields. The faculty of the Vail Program of Nursing view learning as a shared process in which students are encouraged to be active participants and to be actively engaged with the diverse and dynamic community that surrounds us.
The BSN curriculum offer students three options for study:
- A four-year pre-licensure or generic program with admission through Hayworth College (Undergraduate Evening Programs). This option is often selected by students who have graduated from high school some time ago. They have often had some college-level courses elsewhere or may have completed a degree in a field other than nursing. As a convenience for the adult learner, many of the general degree requirements and prerequisite courses can be taken in the evening. Nursing courses, however, are generally scheduled during the daytime.
- A four-year pre-licensure or generic program with admission through the College of Arts and Sciences (Undergraduate Day Programs). This option provides students with a traditional college experience in a program of study that includes the Queen's excellent Core Program in the Liberal Arts and travel abroad through the John Belk International Program. It is the program usually chosen by students entering directly from high school.
- An RN-BSN program for registered nurses with an associate degree or diploma in nursing.
More information about these options is available from an admissions counselor for each of these programs. Information for RN's.
