An Introduction to the Major

One in seven American workers is employed in Information Systems (IS)/ Information Technology (IT). Nine of every ten IS/IT professionals work for a non-IT company.  A major in Information Systems provides the student with a broad liberal education to design and develop information systems for organizations in both the private and public sectors of the economy. The program provides students with the skills needed for entry-level positions in the IS/IT industry as well as a broad perspective on the role and nature of information systems necessary for positions in management and leadership.

The Curriculum

The Information Systems major at Queens follows the Model Curriculum and Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in Information Systems jointly established by the ACM, AIS and AITP Information Systems industry professional organizations. The Information Systems major allows students to select an area of specialization through the choice of a concentration. Common examples of concentrations include: Business, Art, English, Mathematics, and Psychology.

Internships

Internship placements are available with many Charlotte enterprises including private, not-for–profit and government organizations.  These range from relatively small software development companies to very large banks and energy companies. Students have a variety of potential IS internship experiences from which they can choose. In addition to a valuable IS experience, students can learn more to help them decide what type of organizational setting they would like to work in. Several students have been offered full-time positions by the organizations sponsoring their internship.

When You Graduate

The job market for Queens Information Systems graduates is strong.  According to the Bureau of Labor, seven of the ten fastest growing occupations are in information systems.
