The St. Andrew Society of Carolina Book Collection

Everett Library was recently chosen as the site for a generous gift of Scottish literature previously located in the home libraries of members of the St. Andrew Society of Carolina.

Board Members of the Society realized that each of the members collected rare and valuable Scottish Literature books. As a Society project for 2004, the Board sought an appropriate site to donate their books so that these books may be preserved and serve the Scottish Literature research needs of the Charlotte community and region.

Collection Location

Located in the Rena Harrell Special Collections Room in Everett Library of Queens University of Charlotte, the 100+ volumes include books on Scottish history, folklore, culture, and fiction.  It is the hope of the Society that a book of some significance may be added each year to continually enhance the collection.

Patrons who wish to view the collection  are encouraged to  contact Lew Herman, Gifts and Reference Services Librarian, at 704 337 2470 for an appointment.

History of the Society

The first Saint Andrew Society was organized in Charleston, South Carolina in 1729, by a group of immigrant Scots.  This organization is still in existence today and “is still a benevolent order providing funds for any widows and orphans of members who may be in a financial distress.”

The St. Andrew Society of the Carolina was founded in 1955, with Dr. Douglas Glasgow as the principal organizer.  Note that the Society is “of Carolina”.  A similar group founded in Pinehurst is “of North Carolina.”

Saint Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland.  According to Scottish legend, the bones of the disciple were being taken to Scotland in the fourth century by Saint Regulus.  The ship was wrecked on the shore near the present town of St. Andrews.  Thus, through tradition, St. Andrew became the Patron Saint of Scotland.

The Society’s coat of arms includes the South Carolina motto “dum spiro spero” (while I breathe I hope) and the North Carolina motto “esse quam videre” (to be rather than to seem).

The objectives of the Society are to perpetuate Scottish traditions and culture, to promote the establishment and growth of Scottish Societies and organizations and to encourage and support the activities of Scottish events.

Past Activities

The St. Andrew Society of Carolina has supported the Scottish Highland Games at Grandfather Mountain, Loch Norman and Waxhaw.  Funds have been provided to encourage individual excellence in piping, Scottish Highland Dancing and children’s activities.  Funds have also been provided to charities in memory of either members or their widows.

The Society holds business meetings in Charlotte, North Carolina, for members, several times a year.  Social gatherings are also held a few times a year.  The principal activity is the celebration of Saint Andrew Day on November 30, with a banquet and speaker.  At this celebration and other social gatherings, members, spouses and guests are encouraged to wear kilts or tartans which indicate their particular attachment to a Scottish family.  The organization’s officers are President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.  For information on membership, contact Mr. John Turnbulljohnct1@aol.com 704-364 1251.
