BIOL 212: Human Anatomy and Physiology II

This course is the second in a two course sequence designed to teach students the anatomical organization and physiological mechanisms of the human body.  Exams combine knowledge of the course information with analytical thinking to help process how systems interact in the body. The objectives for this course are the following:

1.  Students will understand the organs, hormones and functions of the endocrine system
2. Students will understand the anatomy and physiology of the muscle, cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory and urinary systems.
3. Students will understand the physiological mechanisms of water, pH and electrolyte balance

Required Text:  Marieb, Elaine, N.  Human Anatomy and Physiology, 7th edition, Benjamin Cummings Publishing Company, Inc. 2006.

Attendance policy: Attendance is mandatory for all class meetings. It is the student's responsibility to sign the attendance sheet for each class period. More than three unexcused absences will be reported to the Office of Academic Affairs, as required by Queens University policy and may result in a penalty to the final grade in the class. The first test or quiz missed due to an absence will be counted as a dropped grade of zero. All other missed tests and quizzes will be counted as zeros unless your absence is excused. Allowable excuses are serious illness, a death in the family or other family emergency, or a school sponsored activity. A make-up test will ONLY be allowed if the instructor is notified prior to the test if at all possible.  A lab quiz may only be made up during another lab session during that same week.  If there is inclement weather or other emergency, contact the:
Student Information Hotline Number for Class Cancellations: 704-337-2567

Cell Phone Policy: Cell phones are not allowed to be turned on in class. Any violation of this rule will result in the student being asked to leave the class for that day. There will be a 50 point deduction from the FINAL point total in the class for each incident after the first one. If you have an emergency need to use your cell phone, notify the instructor.

Grading: The total number of points possible for the semester is 1100 points.
Lecture tests: Four tests worth 150 points each will be given on the dates indicated in the syllabus.  Your lowest test grade will be dropped and the highest three grades counted for a possible maximum of 450 points.
Lab Quizzes:  Six lab quizzes worth 25 points each will be given during the laboratory session.  The lowest quiz grade will be dropped for a total of 125 points.
Muscle Quiz:  One quiz on the attachments and actions of skeletal muscles worth 75 points will be given during the laboratory session. This quiz may not be dropped.
Lab Practicals:  Three lab practical exams worth 100 points/100 points/50 points each will be given during the laboratory session for a total of 250 points.
Final exam: This will be a comprehensive exam covering material from both the lecture and lab. It will be worth a total of 200 points.

***Please keep all returned tests and quizzes until you have received your final grade. They are your official record of your grades.

Grading scale: The grades are determined as a percentage based on the the maximum possible total of 1100 points:
A = 93%, A- = 90%, B+ = 87%, B = 83%, B- = 80%, C+ = 77%, C =73%, C- = 70%,
D+ = 65%, D = 60%, F = below 60%.

If you are a student with a verified disability and you require accommodations,
please provide me with the necessary memorandum that was given to you by
Student Disabilty Services.

**YOU MUST EARN A C- OR BETTER IN THIS COURSE TO CONTINUE IN THE NURSING PROGRAM
HONOR CODE: ALL STUDENTS ARE HELD TO THE QUEENS UNIVERSITY OF CHARLOTTE HONOR CODE.  ANY VIOLATIONS WILL BE REPORTED TO THE HONOR COUNCIL.
