Welcome to the Department of Chemistry at Queens. Chemistry is frequently called "The Central Science". Chemists study the molecular nature of the world around them, and their chosen field has close ties to physics, astronomy, biology, environmental science, geology, and other sciences. Our chemistry and biochemistry majors are challenging programs that prepares students for a wide variety of careers. In addition to these programs our courses support programs in Biology, Environmental Science, and Nursing. We encourage any student interested in chemistry courses, outreach, research or careers to come chat with us - our doors are always open and we'd be happy to provide guidance.
The B.S. in Chemistry and the B.S. in Biochemistry consists of core courses in chemistry, biology, mathematics, and physics with electives in chemistry, biology, and mathematics. The course requirements are in line with guidelines set by the American Chemical Society (ACS). Students graduating with this degree will be well prepared to directly enter industry, or to pursue advanced studies in chemistry or medicine. Students who are interested in the medical fields, such as pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, etc., will automatically acquire all the required courses for those programs as part of the biochemistry major. Small laboratory class sizes ensure that all students receive hands-on training with modern chemical instrumentation. Research is an important part of the curriculum, and all students learn to design and carry out independent research projects as part of the analytical chemistry course sequence.
Internships
Students are encouraged to seek out internships that help them explore their intended careers. Chemistry and Biochemistry majors will have opportunities to complete their internships at a variety of places including: medical centers and labs, various clinics, research universities, and other locations.
Students in our department have performed internships at a number of interesting places including: The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department crime lab, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Biomedical Program, Medical University of South Carolina, University of Arkansas Chemistry Department, Virginia State Forensic Science Laboratory, CVS Pharmacy, and GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceutical Research.
Our graduates have had success in gaining acceptance into graduate schools such as: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, East Carolina University, Medical College of Georgia, University of Arkansas, University of Kentucky, Wake Forest School of Medicine, Auburn University, and Morehouse Medical College.
Our students have also pursued successful careers such as: Physician, Pharmacist, Analytical Chemist, Educator, Technical writer, Research Technician, Pharmaceutical Sales Representative, Chemistry Professor, Medical Laboratory Technician, and Airline Pilot!
