BIOL 313 Human Anatomy and Physiology I
A study of the structure of the human body. 3 Hrs. (Fall)

BIOL 313L Human Anatomy & Physiology I Laboratory
Study of human osteology; dissection of the cat and other mammalian organs. Three hours laboratory a week. Lab Fee $25. 1 Hr. (Fall)

BIOL 314 Human Anatomy & Physiology II
A study of the functions of the human body. Laboratory study designed to demonstrate basic physiological principles. Three hours laboratory a week. Prerequisite: CHEM101; BIOL111 is
strongly recommended. Lab fee $25. 4 Hrs. (Spring)

BIOL 120 Introduction to Medical Microbiology
Principles of microbiology with emphasis on the pathogenic bacteria, viruses, rickettsiae and
fungi. Laboratory includes methods for cultivation, isolation and identification of the above. Three hours lecture and three hours laboratory a week. Lab fee $25. May not be counted toward a major except in Nursing. 4 Hrs.

ENGL 110 Communications Skills I
This course develops the students' writing skills and introduces research techniques. Emphasis is on the creation and revision of a variety of writing projects. 3 Hrs. (Fall, Spring, Summer)

ENGL 120 Communications Skills II This course continues to develop the student's writing and research skills with focus on writing about literature: poetry, drama, and fiction. Prerequisite: ENGL 101 3 Hrs. (Fall, Spring, Summer)

PSYC 201 General Psychology
Survey of the field of psychology emphasizing the results of scientific investigations in the area of behavior. 3 Hrs. (Fall, Spring, Summer)

PSYC 304 Abnormal Psychology
A study of the deviant individual from both the dynamic and behavioral viewpoints. The diagnosis, etiology, treatment, and prevention of maladaptive behavior are considered. Prerequisite: PSYC 201. 3 Hrs. (Spring)

PSYC 320 Developmental Psychology
An introduction to developmental processes
from conception to old age. The emphasis in the course is on developmental principles, theoretical views, and recent research. 3 Hrs. Prerequisite: PSYC 201. (Fall, Summer)

SOCI 203 Principles of Sociology
Basic concepts and principles of sociology; relationships and meaning of culture, society, personality, and interaction; analysis of group structure and social organization. 3 Hrs. (Fall,

NURSING COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

NURS 191 Nursing Fundamentals
Nursing 100 introduces concepts basic to the practice of nursing. The course explores health/illness, nursing process, introduction to administration of medications, care of the perioperative client and professional accountability.  The roles of the nurse and other health team members are explored as the student is introduced to the clinical setting. Basic concepts of critical thinking, nursing process, communication, holistic caring relationships, and pharmacology are the
foci of student learning in the clinical setting. Physical assessment, teaching-learning principles, asepsis and documentation are also included. 5 Hrs. Hours: Theory:  42  Clinical:   84

NURS 118 Maternity Nursing
Maternity Nursing is designed to apply the nursing process to the emerging family and to reproductive health problems of women.  Common assessment strategies and interventions for the mother, fetus, neonate and family are explored.  Nursing management of common health needs/problems are introduced.  Emphasis is placed on teaching and learning principles as applied to families of culturally diverse backgrounds. Students perform progressively complex aspects of the professional nursing role while understanding trends and issues in health care.  Students
have clinical experiences with maternity, neonatal, and gynecological clients. 4 Hrs. Theory:  28 hrs   Clinical/Laboratory:  84 hrs.

NURS 124 Introduction to Adult Nursing
This course serves as an introduction to the study of common health problems of adults and older adults.  The student will begin to develop assessment skills and critical thinking skills as they provide nursing care for adults experiencing conditions related to mental health, the older adult and adults with chronic and common health problems.  Selected topics relate to mental health, diabetes, body movement, ingestion/digestion, and absorption/elimination.  Clinical experiences
are provided in the medical-surgical and behavioral health units and agencies. 6 Hrs. Theory: 42 hrs.    Clinical: 126 hrs.

NURS 205 Nutrition
This course includes the basic principles of human nutrition as it applies to all life cycle stages with emphasis on nutrients and their utilization in the human body. Food patterns, availability, acceptability and safety are stressed as they relate to individuals and population groups. Open to all students. 3 Hrs.

NURS 217 Child Health Nursing
This course focuses on application of the nursing process and a holistic caring approach to the care of children and childrearing families.  Theories related to life cycle events, cultural diversity, adaptation and functional health patterns are applied to health care needs related the high-risk newborn and the developing child and family.  Emphasis is placed on accountability for the primary nurse, decision making, collaboration and clinical competence.  Clinical experiences are provided in the hospital setting, in community health agencies and in the home.  Focused assessments and primary, secondary and tertiary levels of healthcare are stressed. 4 Hrs.  Theory:   28 hours   Lab:   16 hours skills   Clinical:  68 hours

NURS 219 Adult Nursing
This course is designed to apply the nursing process to adults who are experiencing  cardiovascular, respiratory health problems, and alterations in coping. The student will utilize concepts of critical thinking, communication and caring as they provide care for the adult
patient. Clinical experiences will be in medical-surgical units in the acute care hospital and community mental health agencies. 5 Hrs.   Theory:   35 hours    Clinical:   105 hours

Nursing 228 Complex Adult Nursing
This course is designed to guide the student in developing assessment and clinical decision-making skills related to the nursing needs of patients in complex care situations. Focus is on
the nursing management of the adult patient with oncologic needs and those individuals with alterations in the function of the neurological, endocrine, hematological and urologic systems. Clinical practice includes oncology and medical surgical units, dialysis unit and intensive care units.. 3 Hrs. Theory:  56 theory hours, 168 clinical hours

Prerequisite : Nsg 217, Nsg 219.
Corequisite:   Nsg 240

Nursing 232 Nursing Preceptorship
This course is designed to facilitate the transition from student to beginning practitioner in the discipline of nursing. Topics for discussion include socialization into the nursing role, professional trends and issues affecting contemporary nursing and health care. Each student is placed in a preceptorship with a registered nurse in an acute care setting. The focus is on the nursing management of multiple clients. 3 Hrs.   Theory:   14 hours   Clinical:  84 hours

COREQUISITE: NURS 240

Nursing 240 Ethics and Issues in Healthcare
This course introduces basic principles of leadership, management and interdisciplinary team
building. Class topics include conflict resolution, personal and professional accountability, healthcare ethical/legal issues, concepts related to change, articulating a personal vision and goals, empowerment and decision-making. 3 Hrs.   Theory:   45 hours
