WJQ at Donor Reception |
"Talk about true chamber music. It's fascinating for me to watch jazz musicians who must constantly 'communicate' with each other since every performance is a unique event. We classical musicians who are tied to our sheet music can learn so much from them." ~ Brian Frumkin

Inter-generational audience at FRL |
"Freedom Regional Library hosted the Western Jazz Quartet, a resident faculty ensemble in the School of Music at Western Michigan University. This intergenerational program brought together toddlers and preschoolers that would normally have attended storytime this morning, senior citizens from Loving Touch Adult Day Care and PALs Adult Day Care and band members from the Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology along with some other library patrons. Nearly 100 attendees enjoyed the cool rhythms of the Western Jazz Quartet as they included some "Mary had a little lamb" along with some Brazilian jams that might be heard during Carnival. They were extremely gracious to their audience and indulged the students from Berry in some Q & A about performing, touring, etc. The half dozen library staff in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the performance as well."
~ from Freedom Regional Library's web-site
“Having the musicians come "off" of the stage and "in" to the classrooms brings such a human element to the overall experience. We were amazed, in awe and fumbling for words to express ourselves. This class is a night class composed primarily of adult students who are trying to finish their Bachelor's degree...Probably 90 % can't read music and listen to "hip-hop"... We have studied the history of the periods and connected to most of the major players through the CD's, old recordings... You guys "fleshed" out the whole genre. To teach about improvisation without actually hearing it happen live has always seemed somehow less than genuine. But when you started the Brubeck piece - something that we listened to and superficially analyzed – everything came to life. They loved it - I loved it. I have taught this course for 7 years now. This is by far the best experience to date."
~Dr. James Glenn to the WJQ after their visit to his Queens class: 'From Jazz to R 'n R'

The Western Jazz Quartet also performed on the 2004-05 and 2005-06 concert season, and performed for First Baptist West and the Manus Academy while they were here in January 2006.
"Our students and staff at Manus Academy thoroughly enjoyed having the Western Jazz Quartet visit our school. The musicians were very congenial, friendly and engaging. Our students thought they were "ultra cool." They were also wonderful ambassadors for jazz music. They played so skillfully and shared much information with us about jazz. As a result of their visit, we are all listening to jazz more, particularly the CD the quartet produced."
