What is Financial Planning?

A relatively young profession, financial planning emerged as a unique discipline about 30 years ago. Distinguishing it from other financial professions is its basic philosophy: financial Planning is a process, not a product. Simply put, it is the process of determining how an individual can meet life goals through the proper management of his or her financial resources. A financial planner takes a "big picture" view of a client's financial situation and makes financial planning recommendations based on the client's needs in areas such as budgeting and saving, taxes, investments, insurance and retirement planning. Or, the planner may work with a client on a single financial issue but still within the context of the client's overall situation.

The CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification was created to meet the professional development needs of those seeking to become financial planners. As the financial planning profession has grown, so too has the CFP® certification become the gold standard for those seeking to demonstrate their competency as financial planners. The rigorous certification standards, which are regularly updated to reflect the current needs of practioners and their clients, have become the bedrock for a global financial planning population.

Academic Standards

To receive the University's certification, students must pass each of the six courses with a minimum grade of 75 AND they must also obtain an overall average of 80 in  all six courses combined. At the end of each course section, students will be given an examination on the material covered in that section of the program. Students will receive a letter notifying them of their score for each examination. If students do not obtain a score of at least 75 on any one of the six course sections, they will have a one time opportunity to repeat that course at no charge when it is next offered and must obtain a minimum grade of 75.

Under the policies of CFP Board, the University must certify students’ successful completion of the program for them to be allowed to sit for the national CFP® Certification Examination. Any questions regarding this policy should be addressed to the Financial Planner Program office.
